Video Poker History

Since Video Poker has been around only about as long as the personal computer, it's still a pretty new game. Video Poker is, of course, a direct decendant of the standard Poker game, the one that conjures up images of cigar-smoking, smooth-talking folks sitting around a round table. No one knows for sure exactly when Poker was first created, though it is widely believed that Poker originally came about by the merging of several other games. There is also some debate as to the origin of the word "Poker". Some references claim it was derived from an eighteenth century French game called poque, while others say it came from a German game called pochspiel. Yet others say it came from the Hindu word pukka.

The game of Poker first became very popular in the US in the mid-1830's. It was played on riverboats and and spread from the Mississippi and Ohio rivers to the east coast via the railroads. The basic poker game has largely remained the same throughout the years. The use of the joker as a wild card began in around 1875, introducing a fun new variable to an already exiting game. Wild cards are now used in many standard Poker games, and are an important element in several versions of Video Poker, including Deuces Wild and Joker Poker.

The first Video Poker games arrived in the 1970's with the advent of the computer chip. Jacks or Better was one of the earliest, most basic, and easy-to-learn versions of Video Poker. It remains popular today, along with many, many new versions of the game. Newer versions include Deuces Wild and Joker Poker as mentioned above, as well as games like Aces & Faces, Crazy 8's, Deuces & Joker, Double Bonus Poker, Double Double Bonus Poker, and many more. Another interesting (and very entertaining!) version is the Multi-Hand Video Poker game, where you can play 3 or more hands at the same time. If you're looking for an online casino that offers Multi-Hand Video Poker, we recommend Video Poker Classic Casino (standard, 4-Hand, and 10-Hand Versions of every game), and 7 Sultans Casino (standard and 4-Hand Video Poker called "Power Poker", and more than 90 total casino games). You can play for fun without depositing money at these casinos if you want to give the games a try.

Although Video Poker is closely related to the standard game of poker, Video Poker play is vastly different because you are playing against a machine rather than other players. There is no need for "bluffing" or other devices in Video Poker, and game play is fast. You can literally play thousands of hands in an hour. Many people feel that Video Poker is one of the most entertaining casino games you can play. Many also prefer it because there is no need for human interaction and no waiting.
